The round the
corner pass is useful
but not used widely in rugby. Valuable for keeping the ball alive after
being tackled when support is near at hand.
Good
rugby - start with the basics
Build good rugby skills
from the basics. A pass is easier if... ...you have good handling skills...
If
you have followed the link... ...from
"Rugby passing"... ...you would know I mentioned... ...being
tackled by a brick toilet block.
I was just kidding!
This
photo is more suitable. It`s
the day I had to get
around... ...Colin
Meads` left leg! Sorry...just nobody around... ...to
tackle me for the photo.
You need to think ahead for this
one. Raise your
arms as the opposition... ...make the tackle.
This
keeps your arms free... ...stops
them being pinned to your
body. Be sure you have a good
grip on the ball.

How
do you make a round the corner pass
Round the corner pass of a rugby ball
showing the finishing position.
As shown
above... ...keep your arms free. The
one
nearest the tackler... ...can be used to protect yourself and
the ball.
The other is free to make the
pass... ...round
the back of the tackling player.
If necessary use
your fingers... ...to press the ball tightly... ...against you
wrist... ...so you can hold the ball in one hand... ...and
move the ball about... ...to
get the best position
for the pass.
The target of
the pass... ...is the support
player... ...coming
through on the burst.
The
two main things to practice
are... ...thrusting your arms
upwards... ...to keep the ball avaiable... ...and
pressing the ball
onto your wrist... ...to maintain one handed control.
Practice with
players... ...likely to be outside you... ...so they know it is
possible... ...and what to expect.
