Rugby scrum-halfA rugby
scrum-half
is the vital link between forwards and backs but they do
much more. Find what you will need to be good in this position.
Position
in the team15
players are on the
rugby field at any one time.
This includes 8 forwards in the scrum.
The
scrum-half
operates as a
link between the forwards in the
scrum, line-out and at break-down in play
and backs deployed
in the rest of the field
. Rugby scrum-half

The scrum-half tends to
be one of the smaller
players on the field but as always the trend is to bigger players.
You need to be tough, physically tough and mentally tough. You will constantly be taking on bigger, stronger, heavier players in attack and defence.
Having Speed is good Accelleration is good Vision is excellent Agility a must Elusiveness is good Handling ability
excellent Kicking
ability good Quick
thinking excellent
Rugby
scrum-half - and the scrumThe
scrum restarts
play after a minor breach of the rules.
It`s
a contest for possession
of the ball with
a small advantage given to the non-offending team.
When a scrum is
formed 8
players from each team, the forwards bind together into a
pack of players and a tunnel is formed
between the two packs.
The scrum-half of the
non-offending team
puts the
ball in to the scrum but only when the hooker is ready
and waiting
If the forwards do a good job
the ball
moves through the scrum to
the feet of
the number-eight.
Prior to that decisions about what
to do with the ball have been made and confirmed by furtive
signals.
These decisions are now carried out. They
could include
a quick attacking
run by the scrum-half a move involving the
number-eight and the scrum-half a tactical kick by
the scrum-half or
whipping the ball out to the backs
As a scrum-half
you will be in the thick of it and you will have to be
able to call on superior
running, handling, kicking and
thinking skills.
When the opposition gets the ball you
as scrum-half must hound
the opposition scrum-half and
provide covering defense. Doing this will ensure
you are on the spot ready to create the link between the
ball
in a break-down
and backs ready to
use it to advantage.
Rugby
scrum-half - at the line-outThe line-out
restarts play after the ball has "gone into touch".
The
duties of
the scrum-half at the line-out
are
similar to
the scrum.
You
must know
what has been decided about where the ball is going and
be able to move it
quickly from the line-out to the
backs if that is what is required
Rugby
scrum-half - in general playThe rugby scrum-half
tends to
be smaller, more elusive, skillful, "cheeky" players
They
work hard to confuse the
oppposition with sniping runs and the unexpected
kicks and passes.
Slower moving forwards make
very easy targets for elusive
running, make sure you are able to sidestep.
Mixing up options
taken passing...kicking...running, especially elusive running, introduces uncertainty
into the opposition which is an advantage for your team
In summary it`s
a vital position very
much about
service - a good pass to the fly-half agility,
handling
skills, speed, thinking, vision, kicking, evasion no pressure!!!
just make
sure
you have all the skills!
So many of the players
who currently are scrum-halves look
back and think being
able to do sidesteps would
have been fantastic.
Please realise now is the
time to learn
and just say to yourself "I`ll find out how" and
know that when you
believe it`s possible you are much more
likely to achieve your
dreams :-)

Will
you be one.
